MADE NOT BORN

ABOUT

Fashion’s possibility for innovation and endless change are what makes the industry so alluring. Yet, behind its glamourous exterior exists the exploitation of workers and the planet. As the world reaches a precipice in which carbon dioxide levels have climbed to the point of no return, the link between environmental harm and mass consumption cannot be overlooked. Fashion, a 2.5 trillion dollar sector, is the second most polluting industry in the world, behind oil (The True Cost, 2015).And, the planet isn’t the only thing caught in fashion’s destructive wake as an estimated 168million children are thought to be working in  factories in developing countries (ILO, 2012).Recognizing that spending is the food that feeds an unethical supply chain, this collection turns to

consumers to be the catalysts for change.

So how does an industry as big as fashion change the way the world thinks about sustainability? At the 2016 Copenhagen Fashion Summit, Vanessa Friedman stated that, “Responsible fashion is many things. It’s worthy, it’s important, it’s complicated, it’s challenging, but it is not sexy”.

Made Not Born, is an artistic response to modern sustainability. This collection is the product of considered craftsmanship that sends a message: clothing does not appear by magic. It intends to deliver painful fashion realities in an aesthetically striking, palatable and “sexy” medium. This collection essentially answers the question, “How does my clothing come to be?”. As a result, the collection makes the case for sustainable consumption through its politically charged garments that showcase both the beautiful and exploitative natures of fashion production.
